Healthy eatingMother's Day

Breakfast in bed has come a long way since burnt toast, soggy cereal and a cup of weak tea passed for a Mother's Day indulgence. Now if you're looking to spoil Mum, it pays to cater to her exact tastes, not to mention cleaning up the kitchen afterwards.

Healthy Mum

She trains hard and eats for fuel so let her know you care with a performance-enhancing breakfast. Healthy Mum will love lightly scrambled tofu or free-range eggs with grilled tomato, a couple of handfuls of spinach quickly tossed with a little olive oil over heat, a palm-sized portion of smoked salmon, grind of pepper and cheek of lemon. Complete the tray with a slice of Mum's preferred bread (say, rye, spelt or soy and linseed), plus freshly squeezed juice for an energy boost and endless cups of antioxidant-rich green tea. It all adds up to a breakfast high in calcium, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, lycopene and fibre, not to mention vitamins A, B, C, D and K to keep Mum young, strong and fit. Then tell her you're booked in for a yoga session together later in the day. And prepare to work.

Decadent Mum

Scented candles and the pop of a champagne cork should let Decadent Mum know she's in for some serious spoiling. If she has a sweet tooth, look no further than Bill Granger's chocolate-filled French toast (exactly as it sounds: single slices of eggy bread fried in butter and topped with chunks of excellent choc before a second slice is added for the golden lid) with strawberries on the side. Mums with a savoury palette meanwhile, will savour an open BLT made with warm sourdough smeared with avocado and topped with really ripe tomato, a drizzle of mayo revved up with a little lemon zest and the very best bacon you can find, grilled to perfection. Keep those bubbles flowing and finish up by running Decadent Mum a bath and laying out fresh towels. Bliss.

New Mum

Considering sleep is probably top of her wish list, taking care of bub and delaying brekkie as long as possible is the first tip. Why not rug up the small fry and head to the green grocer in search of the most luscious fruits of the season while New Mum sleeps in? Figs, pears, pomegranates and raspberries make a change from the usual tropical fruit salad. Pick up a tub of yoghurt and honey for drizzling over the top and serve the mix in a pretty bowl. A stack of the latest magazines, fragrant pot of coffee and closed door should let New Mum know she's welcome to spend the entire morning in bed while someone else runs the house. And surely that's the ultimate gift.

Long-distance Mum

Organisation is key here so start early. Either pack and send your own breakfast hamper or check out online gift services for a selection of foodie favourites Long-distance Mum can prepare herself with a minimum of fuss. Coordinate delivery on the Friday before with a card wishing her a luxurious Sunday morning to herself and follow up with a call later in the day to see how it went. Chocolates, exotic teas, gourmet muesli, handmade biscuits and farmhouse jams are just some of the happy-to-travel provisions guaranteed to make her smile. For the ultimate treat, include a treasured DVD or book so that Long-distance Mum knows your special connection has nothing to do with kilometres.
