Got fussy kids? Become a sneaky chef…

There are so many types of food that contribute towards a healthy, balanced diet. As adults, we're happy to tuck in, but if children hear the words "good for you", they turn their noses up. With our help, get your kids to chow down on superfoods without even realizing it…

Tortilla trick

Fry some onion and bacon in a pan with olive oil, add some pinto beans and kidney beans, mash up and add some water to make a dip consistency. Serve in a tortilla wrap with other typical fajita fillings such as lettuce, chicken, cheese and sour cream.

Bolognese ways

Chop up cauliflower and zucchini and boil in some water with a dash of lemon juice until soft. Drain and blend and stir into your Bolognese sauce - the kids will never know!

Brownie frown

Preheat oven to 170C and butter a cake tin. Sift together 110g plain flower, 1tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt. Separately, whisk three eggs and slowly add 250g soft brown sugar. Melt 160g dark chocolate and 250g butter in a bowl over a pan of hot water. In a blender, mix a handful of blueberries and a handful of fresh spinach. Stir into the chocolate mix and add to the egg/sugar mix. Fold in the flour mixture and add a handful of walnuts. Bake for 35 minutes and leave to cool.

Soup whoop

Kids never seem to question tomato soup as long as there are no yucky lumps! Fry a chopped onion, four rashers of bacon and clove of garlic in olive oil, add ten fresh tomatoes, seasoning, dashes of Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce, two cups of chicken stock and fresh basil. Simmer for twenty minutes, wait until cool and blend. Re-heat and serve. Delicious and full of goodness.

Scream for cream

Make frozen yogurt by mixing together some natural yogurt and a spoonful of yogurt until fluffy. Freeze for one hour, remove and whisk again. Repeat an hour later and throw in raspberries and blueberries. Freeze for another four hours and serve. The kids will think this is a funky new ice cream rather than healthy yogurt!

Tuna tuner

A lot of children hate the smell of tuna but the omega three oils are good for them. Take some leftover mashed potatoes and mix with a drained tin of tuna and some sweetcorn. Grill until warmed through for great fishcakes, delicious served with tomato sauce.

An apple a day

Boil some cooking apples in enough water to cover them until soft, then liquidize once cool. Lightly grease a baking tray with butter and sprinkle with breadcrumbs and brown sugar. Toast then remove to cool. Layer up breadcrumb mixture in a clear bowl with the apple mixture, ending with breadcrumbs on top and serve cold.

Asparag-fuss

Sometimes it's a good idea to let children do something fun with food. Give them asparagus stalks that have been steamed for a couple of minutes to dunk into a runny boiled egg. They'll be so busy enjoying the dipping that they won't notice they're eating something green!
